Floor Sanding Falkirk
Falkirk Floor Sanding (FK1): If you are fed up with having carpets in your home in Falkirk, and would prefer a low maintenance floor that is easy to clean and doesn't gather dust and allergens, perhaps a wooden floor surface may be the answer. If you already have wood floorboards under that dusty old carpet then you are already halfway there. You could have this flooring sanded down and end up with a practical and beautiful floor surface that will be the envy or your friends.
If you do decide to go ahead and get your wooden floors sanded down you will need to find the right people to do it. A quick search on the internet or in the local Falkirk newspaper will turn up a few possibilities. Alternatively you could try asking family or friends to recommend someone. Doing floor sanding yourself is probably not an option unless you are a really accomplished DIYer, and even then you will have to hire some pretty decent equipment which could still be costly.
Your first thought will probably be that this is going to create an awful lot of mess and dust, but that is actually not the case. Your floor sanding company will not be using little hand held sanders such as those you might have used for sanding down a door or some paintwork. They will turn up with some pretty hefty equipment which includes an extraction system that sucks up all the dust as the sanding progresses.
The best floor sanders are made by companies like: Hummer, Lagler, Pallmann and Bona, and most of these are available to hire in places around Scotland if you cannot find any in Falkirk itself. Obviously you will only need to do this if you do elect to press ahead with your own floor sanding project, since specialist companies will have their own sanders. Check with the hire company to find out exactly what you need and take it from there if you take this route.
While you could perhaps move stuff from one side of the room to the other while doing the sanding, it is much better if the room is cleared completely. This should include soft furnishings and furniture, plus any existing floor coverings such as carpets, underlay and grippers. Any screws or nails that are protruding from the floorboards will also need to be removed or punched below the surface.
To end up with a really smooth and damage free floor surface, some additional repair work may need to be done. The entire floor will have to be inspected with a fine tooth comb to identify any splits, defects and cracks, which can be repaired and filled with a good quality wood filler. Similar attention can be given to holes left by nails or screws and damage caused by carpet grippers and threshold strips. The wood filler needs to be matched at closely as possible to the colour of the wood.
Sealing and varnishing your newly sanded floorboards is the last and final part of the process. This is when you really notice the difference in your floor. A coating of an appropriate sealer (for instance Liberon Floor Sealer), will help to bring out the beautiful natural colours of the wood, provide the varnish with a sound base, and at the same time offer some additional protection against various types of damage. Two or three coats of a top quality varnish should then be applied, giving plenty of time for dying between coats.
