Floor Sanding Oxford
Oxford Floor Sanding (OX1): If your property in Oxford has wooden floorboards there is always the possibility that use could use this beautiful natural material as your final floor surface, rather than covering it up with man-made products such as carpet and vinyl. This will probably add some value to your property and also reduce the incidence of dust, allergens and mites, which is especially beneficial if you suffer from asthma or allergies. Having your floorboards sanded down would be the first step in this process.
Floor sanding is not for the faint hearted and if you decide to proceed you will need to be prepared for a bit of upheaval. You could control this to some degree if you choose to do it yourself but not many homeowners in Oxford have the expertise or willingness to take on such a project. Local Oxford floor sanding companies will be your likely port of call and if you can't find a suitable on nearby, there are others throughout Oxfordshire who should be able to help.
In order to get your floors sanded without generating a huge amount of mess and wood dust a professional Oxford floor sanding company will bring in some pretty impressive equipment. Modern sanding machines are very powerful and have an extraction system incorporated to extract all the wood dust as it is generated, meaning the whole process is relatively dust-free. So you can see why going at it with your little hand held Black & Decker sander is not really going to cut it for work like this.
Companies such as: Pallmann, Hummer, Bona and Lagler produce professional floor sanding machinery, and many of these can of course be hired from tool hire businesses around Oxford and elsewhere in Oxfordshire, should you need one. If you're using a specialist floor sanding service for the project, you will not need to concern yourself with that though. It is however worth bearing in mind if you do choose to do your own floors.
While you could perhaps move stuff from one side of the room to the other while doing the sanding, it is much better if the room is cleared completely. This should include soft furnishings and furniture, plus any existing floor coverings such as carpets, underlay and grippers. Any screws or nails that are protruding from the floorboards will also need to be removed or punched below the surface.
When the floor has been sanded with a roughish sandpaper, any required repairs can be carried out before the final smooth sanding finish is completed. Missing pieces of floorboard can be replaced, cracking and splits can be repaired and any ugly holes left by screws, nails and other fixings can be carefully caulked with a matching coloured wood filler, to give your floor that professionally finished appearance.
The last stage of the process will be sealing and finishing your floor. These days not everybody uses sealer on wood floors since the modern varnishes are supposed to do the job of sealing and finishing your sanded wood surface. Our own opinion is that it is better to give your floor a coat of sealant first, as this brings out the natural colour of the wood, gives extra protection against scratching and staining, and gives the perfect base for the final coats of varnish. For varnishing use a good quality polyurethane product such as Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor Varnish and give it two or three coats.
