Floor Sanding Swansea
Swansea Floor Sanding (SA1): If you are fed up with having carpets in your home in Swansea, and would prefer a low maintenance floor that is easy to clean and doesn't gather dust and allergens, perhaps a wooden floor surface may be the answer. If you already have wood floorboards under that dusty old carpet then you are already halfway there. You could have this flooring sanded down and end up with a practical and beautiful floor surface that will be the envy or your friends.
If you do decide to go ahead and get your wooden floors sanded down you will need to find the right people to do it. A quick search on the internet or in the local Swansea newspaper will turn up a few possibilities. Alternatively you could try asking family or friends to recommend someone. Doing floor sanding yourself is probably not an option unless you are a really accomplished DIYer, and even then you will have to hire some pretty decent equipment which could still be costly.
Your first thought will probably be that this is going to create an awful lot of mess and dust, but that is actually not the case. Your floor sanding company will not be using little hand held sanders such as those you might have used for sanding down a door or some paintwork. They will turn up with some pretty hefty equipment which includes an extraction system that sucks up all the dust as the sanding progresses.
Obviously is is not just the professionals who have access to the finest floor sanding machines, and you could easily hire the required machinery if you really are determined to tackle the task yourself. Some of the best known makes of sanders include: Bona, Lagler, Pallmann and Hummer. You are going to need a drum sander and an edging sander, plus some associated equipment and rather than going into all the details here you can ask at the hire shop and they will give you what you need.
Your Swansea floor sanding contractors will probably ask you to clear everything from any rooms that are to be worked on, although they may be prepared to help you with this if you are unable to do it yourself. Chat with them about it beforehand and see what can be worked out. A clear, clean room is essential when carrying out this sort of work, so get all that stuff out of there! Larger heavy items of furniture could possibly be left in there and moved from end to end, but again talk with the company.
To get the sort of professional finish that you are looking for it will almost certainly be necessary to do more than simply sand down your floorboards and give them a coat of varnish. There are bound to be some minor imperfections such as splits, nail holes, screw holes and cracks, and there may even be some larger repairs needed where sections of floorboard are missing or damaged. These should all be repaired to the best possible standard, filled with wood filler and given a final sanding. Any wood filler used should match the colour of the floorboards, test an area before the final filling.
The last stage of the process will be sealing and finishing your floor. These days not everybody uses sealer on wood floors since the modern varnishes are supposed to do the job of sealing and finishing your sanded wood surface. Our own opinion is that it is better to give your floor a coat of sealant first, as this brings out the natural colour of the wood, gives extra protection against scratching and staining, and gives the perfect base for the final coats of varnish. For varnishing use a good quality polyurethane product such as Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor Varnish and give it two or three coats.
