Floor Sanding Derry
Derry Floor Sanding (BT47): The look of your flooring is something which sets your property in Derry apart from those of your friends and neighbours. A beautiful looking floor can add value to your home and transform the whole look of any room. The most attractive of all floor surfaces is natural wood, and the truth is that most of us already have a wooden floor, but cover it up with carpets and other artificial materials. Having your existing wooden floor sanded down, sealed and finished is the easy way to get that floor you have always dreamed of.
There are a number of companies in the Derry area and throughout Northern Ireland, who you could contact for floor sanding services. Obviously with a quite significant project like this you need to find somebody decent. If you have a friend or family member who has had this kind of work done they might be able to give a recommendation for a floor sanding company in Derry who do a good job. This isn't really something that you want to try yourself unless you are a really competent do-it-yourselfer, and you can get your hands on the right equipment.
You may be worried about a lot of dust being generated during the floor sanding process but this should not be the case at all if you decide to call in a professional Derry floor sanding company. They will use specialist floor sanding machines which include powerful extraction systems, easily sucking up any dust that is produced and storing it until it can be properly disposed of. If you went at it with your own electric sander you will fill the house with dust and get yourself in a terrible mess. The result will also not be as good.
Of course this professional machinery is available for hire throughout Northern Ireland, if not in Derry itself, if you decide to go down the do-it-yourself route. It isn't cheap to hire, so get yourself organised and try to get all the sanding done in one day. You will obviously not have to stress about this if you employ a flooring company as they will provide all this equipment themselves.
While you could perhaps move stuff from one side of the room to the other while doing the sanding, it is much better if the room is cleared completely. This should include soft furnishings and furniture, plus any existing floor coverings such as carpets, underlay and grippers. Any screws or nails that are protruding from the floorboards will also need to be removed or punched below the surface.
Once the sanding has been finished your floor may need some minor repairs and general tidying up. Larger nail and screw holes can be filled with an appropriate wood filler and given a final rub down with smooth sandpaper. Cracks and splits can also be given the same treatment. If there are any lumps of wood missing these can be carefully repaired, filled and also rubbed down.
The last stage of the process will be sealing and finishing your floor. These days not everybody uses sealer on wood floors since the modern varnishes are supposed to do the job of sealing and finishing your sanded wood surface. Our own opinion is that it is better to give your floor a coat of sealant first, as this brings out the natural colour of the wood, gives extra protection against scratching and staining, and gives the perfect base for the final coats of varnish. For varnishing use a good quality polyurethane product such as Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor Varnish and give it two or three coats.
Maintenance of Wood Floors
Regular maintenance of your wood floor is very important if it to last for years to come without the need for re-sanding it back to the bare wood and beginning the whole process over again. Keep a look out for worn patches, move furniture into different positions to even out wear and tear, and keep the whole thing clean. Clean, lightly sand, and re-coat worn areas with more varnish or acrylic seal to make it last longer.
