Floor Sanding Dewsbury
Dewsbury Floor Sanding (WF12): If you are fed up with having carpets in your home in Dewsbury, and would prefer a low maintenance floor that is easy to clean and doesn't gather dust and allergens, perhaps a wooden floor surface may be the answer. If you already have wood floorboards under that dusty old carpet then you are already halfway there. You could have this flooring sanded down and end up with a practical and beautiful floor surface that will be the envy or your friends.
There are a number of companies in the Dewsbury area and throughout West Yorkshire, who you could contact for floor sanding services. Obviously with a quite significant project like this you need to find somebody decent. If you have a friend or family member who has had this kind of work done they might be able to give a recommendation for a floor sanding company in Dewsbury who do a good job. This isn't really something that you want to try yourself unless you are a really competent do-it-yourselfer, and you can get your hands on the right equipment.
Your first thought will probably be that this is going to create an awful lot of mess and dust, but that is actually not the case. Your floor sanding company will not be using little hand held sanders such as those you might have used for sanding down a door or some paintwork. They will turn up with some pretty hefty equipment which includes an extraction system that sucks up all the dust as the sanding progresses.
Specialist floor sanding machines are not of course exclusive to the professionals, so if you do decide to have a go at sanding your own floors you could always hire the necessary equipment which is readily available somewhere in the Dewsbury or West Yorkshire area. Ask the hire company exactly what you need and they will advise as to the best machines for your project. There are some well known makes of floor sander including Pallmann, Bona, Hummer and Lagler.
Having a room that is completely clear of furniture and anything else is preferable when you are carrying out the floor sanding operation. The sanders are quite large and need to be swung around the room, therefore having stuff in the way is not ideal. Clear everything out of there and let the dog see the rabbit (as they say), it will make the job so much simpler.
To end up with a really smooth and damage free floor surface, some additional repair work may need to be done. The entire floor will have to be inspected with a fine tooth comb to identify any splits, defects and cracks, which can be repaired and filled with a good quality wood filler. Similar attention can be given to holes left by nails or screws and damage caused by carpet grippers and threshold strips. The wood filler needs to be matched at closely as possible to the colour of the wood.
The last stage of the process will be sealing and finishing your floor. These days not everybody uses sealer on wood floors since the modern varnishes are supposed to do the job of sealing and finishing your sanded wood surface. Our own opinion is that it is better to give your floor a coat of sealant first, as this brings out the natural colour of the wood, gives extra protection against scratching and staining, and gives the perfect base for the final coats of varnish. For varnishing use a good quality polyurethane product such as Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor Varnish and give it two or three coats.
Maintenance of Wood Floors
If you love your attractive new floor, you will want to keep it looking like it does right now. In order to do this it will need regular maintenance and care. You can take a few measures to avoid damaging your floor and these include taking off footwear before entering the room, wiping up spillages as soon as they happen, fitting the feet of furniture with felt pads and cleaning the floor regularly with a good quality wood floor cleaner. Keep your eyes open for worn patches because these will need treating before they break through to the bare wood.
