Floor Sanding Leyland
Leyland Floor Sanding (PR25): If your property in Leyland has wooden floorboards there is always the possibility that use could use this beautiful natural material as your final floor surface, rather than covering it up with man-made products such as carpet and vinyl. This will probably add some value to your property and also reduce the incidence of dust, allergens and mites, which is especially beneficial if you suffer from asthma or allergies. Having your floorboards sanded down would be the first step in this process.
Floor sanding is not for the faint hearted and if you decide to proceed you will need to be prepared for a bit of upheaval. You could control this to some degree if you choose to do it yourself but not many homeowners in Leyland have the expertise or willingness to take on such a project. Local Leyland floor sanding companies will be your likely port of call and if you can't find a suitable on nearby, there are others throughout Lancashire who should be able to help.
Your first thought will probably be that this is going to create an awful lot of mess and dust, but that is actually not the case. Your floor sanding company will not be using little hand held sanders such as those you might have used for sanding down a door or some paintwork. They will turn up with some pretty hefty equipment which includes an extraction system that sucks up all the dust as the sanding progresses.
Obviously is is not just the professionals who have access to the finest floor sanding machines, and you could easily hire the required machinery if you really are determined to tackle the task yourself. Some of the best known makes of sanders include: Hummer, Bona, Pallmann and Lagler. You are going to need a drum sander and an edging sander, plus some associated equipment and rather than going into all the details here you can ask at the hire shop and they will give you what you need.
While you could perhaps move stuff from one side of the room to the other while doing the sanding, it is much better if the room is cleared completely. This should include soft furnishings and furniture, plus any existing floor coverings such as carpets, underlay and grippers. Any screws or nails that are protruding from the floorboards will also need to be removed or punched below the surface.
When the floor has been sanded with a roughish sandpaper, any required repairs can be carried out before the final smooth sanding finish is completed. Missing pieces of floorboard can be replaced, cracking and splits can be repaired and any ugly holes left by screws, nails and other fixings can be carefully caulked with a matching coloured wood filler, to give your floor that professionally finished appearance.
The last stage of the process will be sealing and finishing your floor. These days not everybody uses sealer on wood floors since the modern varnishes are supposed to do the job of sealing and finishing your sanded wood surface. Our own opinion is that it is better to give your floor a coat of sealant first, as this brings out the natural colour of the wood, gives extra protection against scratching and staining, and gives the perfect base for the final coats of varnish. For varnishing use a good quality polyurethane product such as Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor Varnish and give it two or three coats.
Maintenance of Wood Floors
Regular maintenance of your wood floor is very important if it to last for years to come without the need for re-sanding it back to the bare wood and beginning the whole process over again. Keep a look out for worn patches, move furniture into different positions to even out wear and tear, and keep the whole thing clean. Clean, lightly sand, and re-coat worn areas with more varnish or acrylic seal to make it last longer.
