Floor Sanding Stalybridge
Stalybridge Floor Sanding (SK15): If you have wooden floorboards in your home in Stalybridge, you might be thinking about having them sanded down and used as the final floor surface, replacing your existing carpets with a beautiful and hard wearing floor, free of dust, allergens and mites. This can be done with both soft and hardwood floors and it can even add value to your property.
Floor sanding is not for the faint hearted and if you decide to proceed you will need to be prepared for a bit of upheaval. You could control this to some degree if you choose to do it yourself but not many homeowners in Stalybridge have the expertise or willingness to take on such a project. Local Stalybridge floor sanding companies will be your likely port of call and if you can't find a suitable on nearby, there are others throughout Greater Manchester who should be able to help.
Hiring a professional floor sanding company in Stalybridge will mean that the job is done properly and with as little dust and mess as possible. If you used your own hand-held sanding machine you would get dust everywhere throughout the house and it could take months to clear. With specialist sanding equipment all the wood dust is sucked up by a powerful extraction system, leaving just a perfectly smooth wood surface that can then be finished appropriately.
Specialist floor sanding machines are not of course exclusive to the professionals, so if you do decide to have a go at sanding your own floors you could always hire the necessary equipment which is readily available somewhere in the Stalybridge or Greater Manchester area. Ask the hire company exactly what you need and they will advise as to the best machines for your project. There are some well known makes of floor sander including Hummer, Bona, Lagler and Pallmann.
Your Stalybridge floor sanding contractors will probably ask you to clear everything from any rooms that are to be worked on, although they may be prepared to help you with this if you are unable to do it yourself. Chat with them about it beforehand and see what can be worked out. A clear, clean room is essential when carrying out this sort of work, so get all that stuff out of there! Larger heavy items of furniture could possibly be left in there and moved from end to end, but again talk with the company.
Once the sanding has been finished your floor may need some minor repairs and general tidying up. Larger nail and screw holes can be filled with an appropriate wood filler and given a final rub down with smooth sandpaper. Cracks and splits can also be given the same treatment. If there are any lumps of wood missing these can be carefully repaired, filled and also rubbed down.
The last stage of the process will be sealing and finishing your floor. These days not everybody uses sealer on wood floors since the modern varnishes are supposed to do the job of sealing and finishing your sanded wood surface. Our own opinion is that it is better to give your floor a coat of sealant first, as this brings out the natural colour of the wood, gives extra protection against scratching and staining, and gives the perfect base for the final coats of varnish. For varnishing use a good quality polyurethane product such as Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor Varnish and give it two or three coats.
Maintenance of Wood Floors
Once your floor has been completed don't just think that it can be left for years on end without any form of maintenance. Keep it well cleaned and keep an eye out for any worn patches. If any area of a varnished floor wears through to the bare wood, it can be very difficult to repair, so an occasional fresh coat of varnish or a couple of coats of acrylic sealer will help it to last for longer without having to be re-sanded.
