Floor Sanding Wigan
Wigan Floor Sanding (WN1): The look of your flooring is something which sets your property in Wigan apart from those of your friends and neighbours. A beautiful looking floor can add value to your home and transform the whole look of any room. The most attractive of all floor surfaces is natural wood, and the truth is that most of us already have a wooden floor, but cover it up with carpets and other artificial materials. Having your existing wooden floor sanded down, sealed and finished is the easy way to get that floor you have always dreamed of.
There are a number of companies in the Wigan area and throughout Greater Manchester, who you could contact for floor sanding services. Obviously with a quite significant project like this you need to find somebody decent. If you have a friend or family member who has had this kind of work done they might be able to give a recommendation for a floor sanding company in Wigan who do a good job. This isn't really something that you want to try yourself unless you are a really competent do-it-yourselfer, and you can get your hands on the right equipment.
Your first thought will probably be that this is going to create an awful lot of mess and dust, but that is actually not the case. Your floor sanding company will not be using little hand held sanders such as those you might have used for sanding down a door or some paintwork. They will turn up with some pretty hefty equipment which includes an extraction system that sucks up all the dust as the sanding progresses.
Companies such as: Hummer, Pallmann, Lagler and Bona produce professional floor sanding machinery, and many of these can of course be hired from tool hire businesses around Wigan and elsewhere in Greater Manchester, should you need one. If you're using a specialist floor sanding service for the project, you will not need to concern yourself with that though. It is however worth bearing in mind if you do choose to do your own floors.
Although it may not always be necessary, you should really completely clear any rooms that need to be sanded. The sanding machinery is quite bulky and whoever is doing the work will need to have room to swing it around. A clean, clear room is going to make the entire process simpler, so if you can do this so much the better.
To get the sort of professional finish that you are looking for it will almost certainly be necessary to do more than simply sand down your floorboards and give them a coat of varnish. There are bound to be some minor imperfections such as splits, nail holes, screw holes and cracks, and there may even be some larger repairs needed where sections of floorboard are missing or damaged. These should all be repaired to the best possible standard, filled with wood filler and given a final sanding. Any wood filler used should match the colour of the floorboards, test an area before the final filling.
The last stage of the process will be sealing and finishing your floor. These days not everybody uses sealer on wood floors since the modern varnishes are supposed to do the job of sealing and finishing your sanded wood surface. Our own opinion is that it is better to give your floor a coat of sealant first, as this brings out the natural colour of the wood, gives extra protection against scratching and staining, and gives the perfect base for the final coats of varnish. For varnishing use a good quality polyurethane product such as Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor Varnish and give it two or three coats.
