Floor Sanding Derby

Derby Floor Sanding (DE1): If you are fed up with having carpets in your home in Derby, and would prefer a low maintenance floor that is easy to clean and doesn't gather dust and allergens, perhaps a wooden floor surface may be the answer. If you already have wood floorboards under that dusty old carpet then you are already halfway there. You could have this flooring sanded down and end up with a practical and beautiful floor surface that will be the envy or your friends.

If you do decide to go ahead and get your wooden floors sanded down you will need to find the right people to do it. A quick search on the internet or in the local Derby newspaper will turn up a few possibilities. Alternatively you could try asking family or friends to recommend someone. Doing floor sanding yourself is probably not an option unless you are a really accomplished DIYer, and even then you will have to hire some pretty decent equipment which could still be costly.

You may be worried about a lot of dust being generated during the floor sanding process but this should not be the case at all if you decide to call in a professional Derby floor sanding company. They will use specialist floor sanding machines which include powerful extraction systems, easily sucking up any dust that is produced and storing it until it can be properly disposed of. If you went at it with your own electric sander you will fill the house with dust and get yourself in a terrible mess. The result will also not be as good.

Specialist floor sanding machines are not of course exclusive to the professionals, so if you do decide to have a go at sanding your own floors you could always hire the necessary equipment which is readily available somewhere in the Derby or Derbyshire area. Ask the hire company exactly what you need and they will advise as to the best machines for your project. There are some well known makes of floor sander including Hummer, Lagler, Pallmann and Bona.

Floor Finishing DerbyFloor Finishing Derby

Having a room that is completely clear of furniture and anything else is preferable when you are carrying out the floor sanding operation. The sanders are quite large and need to be swung around the room, therefore having stuff in the way is not ideal. Clear everything out of there and let the dog see the rabbit (as they say), it will make the job so much simpler.

To get the sort of professional finish that you are looking for it will almost certainly be necessary to do more than simply sand down your floorboards and give them a coat of varnish. There are bound to be some minor imperfections such as splits, nail holes, screw holes and cracks, and there may even be some larger repairs needed where sections of floorboard are missing or damaged. These should all be repaired to the best possible standard, filled with wood filler and given a final sanding. Any wood filler used should match the colour of the floorboards, test an area before the final filling.

The next job is to give the sanded floor a generous coat of sealer, Liberon is usually a good choice. This provides a perfect base on which to brush the finishing coats of varnish, and offers some valuable extra protection against a number of issues which could affect your floor in the future. This will be resistant to alcohol, heat and water, and also help prevent scratching, scuffing and staining. Once dry, your floorboards can then be given a quick final sanding with smooth paper and finally 2 or 3 coats of finishing varnish.

Mickleover, Quarndon, Allestree, Willinton, Draycott, Melbourne, Hilton, Oakwood, Borrowash, Tutbury, Repton, Egginton, Brailsford, Kegworth, Morley, Long Eaton, Stapleford, Chellaston, Castle Donington, Spondon and more areas of Derbyshire, are within the range of most Derby floor sanding companies.

Wood Floor Maintenance Derby

Once your floor has been completed don't just think that it can be left for years on end without any form of maintenance. Keep it well cleaned and keep an eye out for any worn patches. If any area of a varnished floor wears through to the bare wood, it can be very difficult to repair, so an occasional fresh coat of varnish or a couple of coats of acrylic sealer will help it to last for longer without having to be re-sanded.
