Floor Sanding Newcastle
Newcastle Floor Sanding (NE1): If you or any of your family suffer from asthma or allergies, one way to help reduce the risk within your property in Newcastle is to replace dusty carpets with a clean natural floor surface like wood. If you already have timber floorboards then you will just need to have them sanded down and finished. The result will be a practical, low maintenance and beautiful looking floor.
There are a number of companies in the Newcastle area and throughout Tyne and Wear, who you could contact for floor sanding services. Obviously with a quite significant project like this you need to find somebody decent. If you have a friend or family member who has had this kind of work done they might be able to give a recommendation for a floor sanding company in Newcastle who do a good job. This isn't really something that you want to try yourself unless you are a really competent do-it-yourselfer, and you can get your hands on the right equipment.
Your first thought will probably be that this is going to create an awful lot of mess and dust, but that is actually not the case. Your floor sanding company will not be using little hand held sanders such as those you might have used for sanding down a door or some paintwork. They will turn up with some pretty hefty equipment which includes an extraction system that sucks up all the dust as the sanding progresses.
The best floor sanders are made by companies like: Hummer, Bona, Pallmann and Lagler, and most of these are available to hire in places around Tyne and Wear if you cannot find any in Newcastle itself. Obviously you will only need to do this if you do elect to press ahead with your own floor sanding project, since specialist companies will have their own sanders. Check with the hire company to find out exactly what you need and take it from there if you take this route.
Before any sanding actually begins the relevant rooms will need to be completely clear of furniture and furnishings. Carpets and associated flooring will need to be removed, as will any nails or screws which are sticking up from the flooring. The sanding machine has to be swept around the room so it is better without any obstructions in the way.
To end up with a really smooth and damage free floor surface, some additional repair work may need to be done. The entire floor will have to be inspected with a fine tooth comb to identify any splits, defects and cracks, which can be repaired and filled with a good quality wood filler. Similar attention can be given to holes left by nails or screws and damage caused by carpet grippers and threshold strips. The wood filler needs to be matched at closely as possible to the colour of the wood.
The last stage of the process will be sealing and finishing your floor. These days not everybody uses sealer on wood floors since the modern varnishes are supposed to do the job of sealing and finishing your sanded wood surface. Our own opinion is that it is better to give your floor a coat of sealant first, as this brings out the natural colour of the wood, gives extra protection against scratching and staining, and gives the perfect base for the final coats of varnish. For varnishing use a good quality polyurethane product such as Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor Varnish and give it two or three coats.
